What is a Senior Research Project?

At BASIS Tucson, seniors have the chance to propose an independent research project that takes place off campus during the last trimester of the year. The seniors whose proposals are accepted write their own syllabi and then head off into the world, to a site where they conduct their research while interning with a professional in the field. Those of us stuck on campus follow their adventures on this blog. Now that the projects are over, we are all excited to attend their presentations. The schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, May 11, 6-8 PM
at the U of A Poetry Center (environmentalism projects)
Sierra Cordova, Nicole Rapatan, Zobella Vinik and Dany Joumaa (see titles of projects, below)

Saturday, May 14, 10-12 AM
at The Loft Cinema (arts projects)
Clarice Bales, Samone Isom, Josh Waterman and Angelynn Khoo (see titles of projects, below)

Gabriel's SRP

Sup sons.

Well I must say it was a very interesting first day working with the Critical Path Institute. Here's the rundown of exactly what happened:

  • I show up on time to find my advisor doesn't get in until a half hour later.
  • Someone in the office broke his arm.
  • I get my assignment to drastically acquire data on several lists that connect drugs to cause a dangerous heart condition (that may cause sudden death) called Torsades de Pointes.
  • I am temporarily placed in an empty office room with a keyboard, mouse, and a desk that only contains two packets of soy sauce and fortune cookies.
  • I have to get a key to use the bathroom.
  • I attend my first board meeting and realize how much money pharmaceutical companies can throw around at anything. ("Cheap" is 25,000 dollars or so.)
  • I find that my list is being pushed to be recognized nationally. Hopefully FDA.
  • I got my permanent office, which has a laptop and a docking station, and I will be populating it with pictures of my family and girlfriend.
  • I found out the office gives out free coffee and soda. Plus I am looking forward to keeping my food in a refrigerator and warming it with a microwave. Boo Yeah.
I definitely am looking forwards to this internship.

It sounds like you are off to a solid start. Please make two posts per week: once on Monday, summarizing goals for that week, once on Friday summarizing what actually happened.
