What is a Senior Research Project?

At BASIS Tucson, seniors have the chance to propose an independent research project that takes place off campus during the last trimester of the year. The seniors whose proposals are accepted write their own syllabi and then head off into the world, to a site where they conduct their research while interning with a professional in the field. Those of us stuck on campus follow their adventures on this blog. Now that the projects are over, we are all excited to attend their presentations. The schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, May 11, 6-8 PM
at the U of A Poetry Center (environmentalism projects)
Sierra Cordova, Nicole Rapatan, Zobella Vinik and Dany Joumaa (see titles of projects, below)

Saturday, May 14, 10-12 AM
at The Loft Cinema (arts projects)
Clarice Bales, Samone Isom, Josh Waterman and Angelynn Khoo (see titles of projects, below)

An Editorial? - Sierra

SO.. I’m making progress. I’ve finally come to the conclusion that my project is not going to be about the history of environmental policy and the factors that led to its creation. It is not going to be a comparison of the environmental regulation process between the federal government and the state government, nor will it be a comparison of the creation of environmental regulation within the federal and state governments. It is to be a study of the effectiveness and efficiency of the application of environmental policy, with Harris Environmental Group serving as my case-study. This means interviews. By discovering, from the employees of Harris, what is perceived by those involved in the enforcement of environmental regulations as the most effective methods, I think it is possible that I could create an editorial concerning the problems I’ve found within the system and, possibly, if hit with a sudden wind of inspiration, propose possible solutions to these issues . I’ve spent an inglorious amount of time reading, so I’m excited to delve into something different. I’m also going to have to begin employing some organizational skills as I organize the nice pile of notes I’ve taken and see what I can use in this editorial. I doubt it’s going to be too sizeable, so I need to choose wisely and force myself to get rid of stuff (something I’ve never been good at). Last, as all those lovely BASIS teachers seem to have contacts with local papers, so there is a chance that this editorial may be published in one of them! It would be incredibly nerve-wracking but, of course, too exciting to pass up.

Until tomorrow,

Sierra

Hi Sierra -
Don't forget that while preparing an editorial you can also create other useful project items (the buffet approach), like an overview of the history & structure of environmental policy, a survey of major environmental/development issues here in Tucson, an introduction to careers in environmental policy & regulation, a daily/weekly reflection journal/blog, etc. This will enable you to concretely produce project material while you are zooming in on your editorial topic. Also, make sure to get feedback from me, Toews or your Aunt Betty along the way.

Another idea that might be cool is some sort of publicity / advertising piece for HEG - could be a powerpoint, a radio ad, a brochure, an article, an interpretive dance....
