What is a Senior Research Project?

At BASIS Tucson, seniors have the chance to propose an independent research project that takes place off campus during the last trimester of the year. The seniors whose proposals are accepted write their own syllabi and then head off into the world, to a site where they conduct their research while interning with a professional in the field. Those of us stuck on campus follow their adventures on this blog. Now that the projects are over, we are all excited to attend their presentations. The schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, May 11, 6-8 PM
at the U of A Poetry Center (environmentalism projects)
Sierra Cordova, Nicole Rapatan, Zobella Vinik and Dany Joumaa (see titles of projects, below)

Saturday, May 14, 10-12 AM

FANTASTIC!!!

Fantastic, marvelous, phenomenal, great, wonderful. All those words mean roughly the same thing, but "fantastic" is my favorite. It comes from fantasy, which are things that do not really exist and that make reader's eyes brighten with anticipation and excitment. So, my first day was fantastic.

My first assignment was to read a book--how perfect is that?--and catch any small typos or gramatical errors. Good book too. Tis called For Sale By Owner, and is a collection of short stories about realistic situations, yet still interesting. After that I made some phone calls taking orders from bookstores that want to order some books from Kore Press. After that I used the phone with the aid of a mechanised voice to authorise credit card purchases that had been made a few days prior at a book fair in D.C, which I did not attend.

Then I went on my first intern errand, returning an apple cord to the apple store which is in La Encantada. Swanky place! The guy who helped me was wearing a beanie with the apple logo on it, and there was another employee clad in purple tights. Just goes to show the sort of crowd apple caters too. Ahem. Ok, that's enough.

Great stuff! And, to refresh the memories of my beloved readers, I am interning at Kore Press. It is a local non-profit publisher that's mission statement basically means they publish women's work because women aren't published enoughed. And transgendered people as well.

SO EXCITED!!!!

Samone, I'm so glad you've gotten to leap into practical work so quickly. How was the experience of proofreading your first book? Any unexpected challenges?
